Directing Energy
Where We Focus Is Where Our Energy Goes and Things Multiply!
We often hear about the benefits of positive reinforcement, but many of us still focus on negative behaviors many times, hoping to motivate others to change.
Are you one of them? Has this approach been helpful? Do behaviors improve, or do things only seem to get worse? Have you tried focusing on the positives instead? Have you noticed that when you highlight the positives, they tend to multiply?
Reflect on your experiences. Why do you think happens?
Our brains tend to seek out information that confirms our beliefs and focus. If you focus on negative aspects, you may develop a negativity bias, where you become more likely to notice faults and problems. Conversely, focusing on positives can create a positivity bias, enhancing your overall perception and well-being.
When we highlight and acknowledge positive behaviors, we reinforce them. People are naturally inclined to repeat behaviors that are recognized and appreciated because it makes them feel valued and successful.
When negative behaviors are the primary focus, it can create a cycle where negative actions lead to negative responses, which in turn lead to more negative actions. This feedback loop can perpetuate and even escalate negative behaviors.
People often become defensive when they are frequently criticized, leading to resistance rather than change. This defensiveness can manifest as an increase in negative behavior as a form of pushback.
What we pay attention to grows. When we consistently notice and comment on positive behaviors, we bring more awareness to those actions. This increased focus can help the individual recognize and replicate the behaviors more often. Positive recognition can boost motivation, morale, and confidence too.
What do you want to focus on in the people around you?
With Love and Gratitude!
